Scope and Contents

The documents contain strategies for marketing and advertising in the early years (1989-1995) of the WSU Vancouver campus. The focus includes developing community partnerships in Southwest Washington and advancing the university as a topic and presence in the local press. Many of the documents feature faculty expertise and the theme of teaching excellence and community commitment with the aim of recruiting students. Later documents highlight student engagement and achievements on projects in collaboration between students and faculty. The collections consist of press realeases, printed email corresponces, and memos as well as flyers and other ephemera used in advertising campaigns.

Biographical / Historical

WSU Vancouver's Office of Marketing and Communications originated as the Office of Campus Advancement was a precursor to and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. This office oversaw campus fundraising, event planning, internal and external communications and a host of other activities now conducted separatly through Marketing and Communications and Development and Alumni Relations. It's early mission focused on public realations and campus image. The office split into separate departments at the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year.

Abstract

The collection contains early documents (1988-1995) from Marketing and Communications that focus on presenting the campus image to the public. The collection features planning for advertising campaigns, highlighting community partnerships, faculty expertise, fundraising (Chancellor's Society Campaign), and the advantages of attending WSU Vancouver. The planning documents illustrate early efforts to coordinate marketing strategies on campus and between the Vancouver campus and WSU Pullman. Discussions include goals for public relations, surveys for developing a faculty expertise guide, Faculty Focus advertisements, and press releases discussing faculty and student achievements in the community. Later documents (2006-2009) focus on the development of the four-year university and the inclusion of lower division level coursework at WSU Vancouver. These include samples of applications for new college students and transfer students, press releases highlighting student engagement and diversity, and the introduction of civics week. The collection also contains plans for campus maps, visitor's guides and a news release packet for 2009 commencement.

Arrangement

The collections is arranged within one document box and consists of 21 file folders. The files are organized chronologically. Some folders are left undated and arranged between the bulk dates of 1989-1995 and 2006-2009.
