Biographical / Historical

Washington State University Vancouver's administrative leadership began prior to the official establishment as a branch campus in 1989. In 1988 as WSU assumed operations for the Southwest Washington Joint Center for Education (SWJCE) located on the campus of Clark College in Vancouver, Washington. George Condon, director of SWJCE, initially served as director for WSU at Vancouver. In 1989, shortly following the official opening of the branch campus, Hal Dengerink was hired as campus dean. Dengerink oversaw the next two decades of leadership, expanding undergraduate curriculum, moving campus operations to Salmon Creek, launching the Science Institute and the Engineering and Computer Science program. In the mid-2000s the position of Campus Dean evolved into Chancellor. Dengerink held the position until his retirement in 2011. Lynn Valenter assumed the role of Interim Chancellor until 2012 when Emile "Mel" Netzhammer was hired as Chancellor.

WSU Vancouver Advisory Council members include leaders representing all sectors of the community. The council helps support the university’s mission and helps to establish partnerships for the university's success. Members are appointed by the chancellor and are strictly advisory.
