Scope and Contents

The collection includes CDs and DVDs containing supporting materials and presentations sponsored by the WSU Vancouver Library. Included are featured presentations from Val Ogden and Dan Ogden moderated by Public Affairs professor Mark Stephan. The presentation dates are from March 2, 2007 and April 20, 2007 respectively. Both Val and Dan discusses their careers and history in politics. The Ogdens were WSU Alumni. Additional DVDs and CDs provided for the presentation inlucde radio and TV advertisements that Dan Ogden collected while working as an advance man for the John F. Kennedy General Election campaign.

Other presentations in the collection include audio af an hour long poetry talk with former WSU Vancouver English professor Tim Hunt. The presentation is dated from 2010 and includes readings from a book of poems that Hunt wrote.

In addition to these presentations, the collection also contains a 20 minute video titled Sovereign to Sovereign: Northwest Indian Nations and Lewis and Clark produced by former WSU Vancouver History professor Jackie Peterson. The video features documentary style footage on the subject of Northwest indigenious peoples encouter and relationship with Lewis and Clark.

Biographical / Historical

The Washington State University, Vancouver Library was established in 1989 where it operated out of a room at Bauer Hall on the Clark College campus. The Library moved to its location in the Library Building in 1996 with the construction of the WSU Vancouver campus in Salmon Creek. The mission of the library is to advance the research and learning goals of all members of the WSU Vancouver community and to serve as an information resource within the Southwest Washington community.

As part of its community engagement, the library has hosted many presentations, receptions, and workshops over the years. It is an opportunity to bring the campus community and the public together to learn about the careers, scholarship and creative activities of students, faculty, and alumni.

Featured in this collection are presentations from Val and Dan Ogden. The Ogden's were a power couple involved in politics and assisting with the establishment of WSU Vancouver. Val Ogden served in the Washington State House of Representatives (1991-2003) on behalf of a district in Clark County. Dan Ogden was a former political science professor at WSU in Pullman. In 1961, he became an advance man for John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign. Later, he served on staff at the U.S. Department of the Interior. Val and Dan Ogden were heavily involved in the Democratic party. Both were also WSU alumni. The presentations feature a general discussion about their role in politics, legislation, and contemporary reflections on current politics. The presentations and interviews are moderated by Mark Stephan, professor of Political Science at WSU Vancouver.

One is labeled religion. Two 8mm film reels. One is labeled Kennedy Visits states. One is labeled Contribute-Work-Vote, Vote 1-Minute-1960. This reel is produced by the Advertising Council, Inc. Advertising Council Register and Vote Campaign.

Abstract

The collection consists of CDs and DVDs of presentations sponsored by the WSU Vancouver Library during the 2000s. The presentations include talks from former Washington State Representative Val Ogden and her husband Dan Ogden. Other presentations include audio from a poetry reading by former WSU Vancouver professor Tim Hunt and a feature video produced by Dr. Jacqueline Peterson titled Sovereign to Sovereign: Northwest Indian Nations and Lewis and Clark. The audio and video recordings were housed and circulated in the WSU Vancouver Library until their transfer to the Archives and Special Collections in 2014. The contents of this collection have been digitized. These files serve as primary access to the collection. The collection also includes the original reels that were digitized and used for Dan Ogden's presentation.
