Biographical / Historical

Washington State University Vancouver was established in 1989 as a branch campus of the state's land-grant institution. During the first few years of operation, classes were held in Bauer Hall at Clark College offering upper-division undergraduate courses and graduate level courses. In 1996, the university moved to a newly constructed campus at its current location in Salmon Creek. Over the next decade the campus grew exponentially with increasing enrollment and the addition of serveral new buildings including the Multi-media Classroom Building and the Science and Engineering Building. In 2006, WSU Vancouver began offering lower-division level courses and welcomed its first freshman class.

The Office of Marketing and Communications began highlighting WSU Vancouver activities, events, and accomplishments of groups and individuals through its flickr social media account in 2009. The photographic images document an increase of student participation and changes in the campus community since WSU Vancouver's transition to a four-year university.

Abstract

The collection contains digital photographs from WSU Vancouver's Office of Marketing and Communications. The photographs were originally part of a flickr social media account established for the campus. The images document activities and events on campus between 2009 to the present. There are over 34,000 digital images in this collection. Most images have been captured in JPEG format with fewer than 30 images in the PNG format. The transfer of these images is intended as a preservation backup measure with the anticipation for access and use as the demand for social media and digital platforms fade or as featured images transition into different formats.

Arrangement

The collection is assembled from albums stored in WSU Vancouver's flickr social media account. These were captured and organized as groups of images in a series arranged by year starting with 2009. Subsequent folders within each series directory contain the images highlighted for each year, arranged alphabetically by the original title of the album appearing in the flickr account. A few photographs are either undated or from years prior to 2009. Many of these can be found in the Miscellaneous series of the collection.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The capturing of images from WSU Vancouver's flickr account began in 2021 with the assistance from the Office of Marketing and Communications. The collection was originally accessioned as UA-WSUV-2021-001.

Accruals

The collection is an accural. Images featured in WSU Vancouver's flickr account will continue to be captured for deposit in the Office of Marketing and Communications, WSU Vancouver; Digital Photographs Collection (Archives.DR.031) within Archives and Special Collections on an annual basis.
