Content Description

Three document boxes containing departmental papers, correspondence, notes and emphemera between the mid 1990s and the early 2000s during the active years of Jacqueline Peterson's career as faculty at WSU Vancouver. The materials pertain to Peterson's work and duties as history faculty and includes professional development, work in improving the Comparative American Cultures (CAC) program and assisting students toward a career track in history related fields. Contents include a proposal for a minor in museum science, general organization surrounding campus events, the history club and course materials.

Biographical / Historical

Jacqueline (Jackie) Peterson received her PhD from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1981. She joined Washington State University History Department as faculty in 1983. She later transfered from Pullman to WSU Vancouver in 1994. Peterson primarily taught Native American history, North American history and public history while at WSU Vancouver. One of Peterson's notable projects was a National Endowment of the Humanities funded museum exhibit entitled Sacred Encounters: The Society of Jesus and the Indians of the Northwest. She servered as curator and director. Peterson's publications include Sacred Encounters: Father De Smet and the Indians of the Rocky Mountain West (University of Oklahoma Press, 1993) and The New Peoples: Being and Becoming Metis in North America, ed., with Jennifer S.H. Brown (University of Manitoba Press, 1991). Peterson retired from WSU Vancouver in 2010. She is professor emerita of History and Comparative American Cultures at Washington State University Vancouver.

Abstract

The collection consists of papers, communications, course notes, ephemera, administrative records and other items compiled under the tenure of Jacqueline Peterson, PhD as faculty and department head of WSU Vancouver's History Department from 1994-2010. The papers were donated to WSU Libraries by Peterson in 2017.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in three document boxes consisting of a total of 31 file folders. The organization resembles the original order in which the materials were received.
