Scope and Contents

The collection includes bylaws, meeting minutes, and early documentation and works produced for the Salmon Creek Journal, a student run literary journal initially facilitated by the English Club in the late 1990s. The collection contains poetry and prose featured in the first three issues of the Salmon Creek Journal (1997-2000) with an authors index.

Biographical / Historical

The WSU Vancouver English Club was established in 1997 as a student organization. It was originally organized under the name the "Writers' Club." The club included students from the English and Humanities majors and was advised by faculty from the English Department, Dr. Desiree Hellegers and Dr. Wendy Dasler-Johnson. The club operated through the guidance of a council with established bylaws and a stated mission to "enrich the student culture at WSU Vancouver by facilitating English related events and programs." The club launched and facilitated the student literary publication known as the Salmon Creek Journal in 1997 and continued this role through 2000.

Abstract

The collection contains general information, bylaws and meeting minutes from the WSU Vancouver English Club for the years 1997 and 1998. Included is documentation, history and guidelines for the early formation of the Salmon Creek Journal, an annual student publication featuring the written and creative works of students on the WSU Vancouver campus. Approximately 122 drafts of poems and short stories or prose featured in the Salmon Creek Journal between 1997 and 2000 are included.

Arrangement

The collection is contained in one document box with 20 file folders. The files are arranged as a single collection series. Meeting minutes from 1997 to 1998 are organized chronologically. Poetry, prose an other creative works in the collection are arranged alphabetically by the last name of the author.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The files in this collection arrived in the Archives as a separate grouping of miscellaneous materials intermixed in a filing cabinet stored in the attic of the VDEN (Dengerink Building formerly known as the Administration Building) in 2015. The English Club materials were later identified and arranged as a collection and processed as accession UA-WSUV-2019-004 in 2019.
