Biographical/Historical note
Washington State University Vancouver originated from the efforts of the Southwest Washington Joint Center for Education (SWJCE), which began as the collaboration between Washington State University, Evergreen State College and Clark Community College in 1983. The Joint Center held its first classes at Hudson’s Bay High School, offering a handful of courses in engineering and computer programming. In order to meet the expectations for further growth in enrollment, the Joint Center moved to the Bauer Hall building on the Clark College campus and in 1989 formally established itself as Washington State University Vancouver, a branch of the state’s land-grant institution. For nearly seven years WSU Vancouver expanded its academics, faculty and enrollment at Bauer Hall giving an opportunity for residents in Southwest Washington to attend upper division level courses for undergraduate and Master degree programs.
In 1996 WSU Vancouver moved to its permanent location in Salmon Creek. Since then, the WSU Vancouver campus has continued to expand and add new academic programs.
The accumulation of campus photographs, publications, and documents originated just prior to WSU Vancouver's establishment in 1987. In the early 1990s, these assets were held by the Office of Campus Advancement, a precursor to WSU Vancouver's Office of Marketing and Communications and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Campus Advancement served as a central contact for information about the campus and oversaw campus fundraising, event planning, internal and external communications and a host of other activities conducted by Marketing and Communications and Development and Alumni Relations. The office split into two separate departments at the beginning of the 2006-2007 school year. At that time, historical assests formerlly held by Campus Advancement were maintained by the Office of Marketing and Communications who then deposited the the early photographs, publications, and documents in the Archives and Special Collections in 2008.
