Biographical/Historical note

Lynn Degerstedt was a foundational figure in the development of higher education in Southwest Washington, best known for his instrumental role in the establishment of Washington State University (WSU) Vancouver. A World War II veteran and pilot, Degerstedt spent 15 years in community relations at ALCOA before transitioning to academia. He served as the first director of the Clark College Foundation in 1973 and later became the inaugural director of the Southwest Washington Joint Center for Education in 1983. In this capacity, he spearheaded the efforts to assess regional educational needs, which directly paved the way for the creation of the WSU Vancouver branch campus.

Beyond his contributions to WSU, Degerstedt was a prolific civic leader in Vancouver. He remained active in the community well into his retirement, serving with the Fort Vancouver Kiwanis Club, the Salvation Army, and the Clark College Foundation board. His work is widely credited with bridging the gap between community industry and academic growth, ensuring that Southwest Washington had access to local undergraduate and graduate-level education.
